ABBRA Training Programs

MARINE COMPOSITE-REPAIR CERTIFICATION

2004 marks the beginning of the Marine Composite-Repair Certification program endorsed by the American BoatBuilders & Repairers Association (ABBRA) and taught by Charlie Teran. Offered in three segments, this program offers both online training and hands-on verification of skills and knowledge. Participants who successfully complete the program will be industry-certified in the field of marine composite repair and boat reconstruction.

MARINA STRADDLE LIFT AND FORK LIFT TRAINING.
ABBRA just successfully concluded a program at Manchester Marine (Manchester, MA) for 22 professionals. Are you interested in registering for the next program? Email us at info@abbra.org.

Are you interested in hosting a straddlelift and/or forklift training course in your yard? It's a cinch to arrange. The course is conducted at a "host marina" using the marinas equipment. The host marina provides space, required equipment and one qualified operator. A minimum of 14 participants is required for each session. Host marinas receive two free spots for every 14 pre-paid participants. To request information on hosting on-site training, contact the ABBRA office by emailing info@abbra.org.

BASIC DIESEL ENGINE TRAINING AND TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION.
Sept. 27 - Oct. 3

This two-day course is designed for the technician with experience in the service and repair of marine inboard gasoline engines. It's the training for technicians who want to advance those basic mechanical skills as they relate to marine diesel engines. Course work is a combination of classroom and extensive hands-on engine lab exercises.

ADVANCED DIESEL TECHNICIAN TRAINING.
Sept. 27 - Oct. 3

This two-day course is for the diesel engine technician who has mastered the basic marine diesel engine skills as covered in the ABBRA Basic Diesel Engine Technician Certification course, and who wants to advance those skills to those covered in the following curriculum. Course work is a combination of classroom and extensive hands-on engine lab exercises. Pre-registration testing is provided to employers who want to determine that their prospective enrollees for this program have the requisite experience to benefit from the course experience.

FIBERGLASS REPAIR AND TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION.
Sept. 27 - Oct. 1
The five-day ABBRA Fiberglass Repair And Technician Certification program is designed to bring the entry-level fiberglass repair technician to a working level of expertise. The more experienced technician will deepen the understanding of complex repairs, and gain advanced skills. Curriculum includes: show & worker safety; solvents, catalysts & release agents; resin types; differences & applications; secondary bonding; repairs to cored laminates; vacuum bagging & resin infusion methods; working with carbon fiber & Kevlar; post curing methods; and, surface sealing to prevent osmotic blistering.

The four-day ABBRA Topcoat Application program will advance both the beginning and experienced topcoat applicator's level of expertise in boat surface preparation, deepen the understanding of topcoat systems and application equipment and techniques, build skills in estimating and troubleshooting the job, and ensure thorough comprehension of current shop and personnel safety practices. Students will have plenty of shop projects to practice their mastery by preparing fiberglass panels for finish topcoat applications in a state-of-the-art paint workshop. Curriculum includes: setting up your paint shop; product overview; selecting the system; the spray gun; surface preparation; sanding-abrasives; primers and application use of high build primers; fairing and the use of fairing compounds; the topcoat and mixing; application of topcoats; detailing the finished product; repairing topcoats; and, estimating paint work.
