Marine Composite-Repair Certification

Become an ABBRA certified composite-repair technician, the only certification for composite repair in the field of marine composite repair and boat reconstruction. You can achieve this certification by passing an on-site test labs offered by the American Boatbuilders and Repairers Association (ABBRA) in partnership with the New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) and the ProBoat E-Training

How you can become certified

First, attend ABBRA's introductory course to gain the necessary pre-requisite knowledge needed to pass the hands-on test. The introductory course covers Show & worker safety; solvents, catalysts & release agents; resin types; differences & applications; secondary bonding; repairs to cored laminates; vacuum bagging & resin infusion methods; working with carbon fiber & Kevlar; post curing methods; and, surface sealing to prevent osmotic blistering. You can access this introductory course material two ways.

1. Gain access to course material and information from the computer in your shop or home online by registering with ProBoat E-Training. ABBRA and ProBoat E-Training have teamed up to provide you with basic and intermediate composite-repair knowledge and skills through two online courses designed specifically to prepare you for ABBRA's composite-repair certification exam. Once you've completed your online preparation, you can register for the on-site lab testing. For more information about the online courses or to register with ProBoat E-Training click here.

2. Attend the ABBRA-NEIT's two-day hands-on introductory course. The on-site certification testing immediately follows the introductory course at NEIT's Rhode Island laboratory. Once you have completed the introductory course, you are eligibible for the on-site certification. This three day hands-on experience is held at NEIT's Rhode Island Campus. Those that successfully complete this hands-on lab will receive an ABBRA Marine Composite-Repair Certification

Both the online and hands-on courses are intended for the repair technician, surveyor, adjuster, shop manager, estimator, and the do-it-yourselfer who desires a higher level of knowledge in composite construction, damage analysis, cosmetic and structural repair, gelcoat pigment- and color-matching, and blister repair, as well as those interested in meeting U.S. Coast Guard specs and complying with EPA and OSHA standards. Those who complete the full program gain a Marine Composite Certificate recognized by various marine-trade associations.
